Kayla needed a project for work experience and asked me to teach her how to sew. I just so happened to have purchased this vintage apron pattern for my own girls for Christmas so I recommended that we make her mother Jody an apron from start to finish. First, we read the pattern and determined the style, fabric amounts and what notions would be needed.

Next we made a trip to the local quilt shop called Quiltopia. The owner was very helpful and encouraging and shared stories of how she learned to sew as a young girl. Kayla chose a vintage fabric with cherries. So cute.

Of course, we had to walk over to the local Tim Hortons for a cocoa break after shopping.

While we were preshrinking the fabric we customized the pattern by tracing the small size to tissue paper and used the computer to scan the directions so Kayla could own her own pattern for future projects.

We got the fabric out of the dryer and now it was time to start cutting it out. My kitchen breakfast bar was a perfect place for this.

More cutting. It was a lined apron.

Can't you just hear the hum of the sewing machine? The garden room was so light and airy.

Look at this girl go! She's a natural.

Now comes a fun part. Turning the fabric right side out. We are giving birth to an apron!

Voila!!! Is this cute, or what????? In the excitement the apron became a Halloween present instead of a Christmas present. Jody got to wear it while making her Christmas baking that way. Good job, Kayla. And she told me today that she got a sewing machine for Christmas!
Happy sewing....
how cute!!!
