What is creativity? What is it we do when we create something? We start with an idea or a number of ideas. Something comes into our minds. We have a flow of ideas, sometimes a tremendous flow of ideas, at times in one direction, or at other times in another direction, or perhaps even ten directions at once. And we have to make a choice. We cannot do everything that comes into our minds. From Edith Schaffer's Hidden Art
I found this lovely quote in a book that I received from Jean that used to belong to our dear Thelma. It is called The Art of Life. Now I'll be on the search for the Hidden Art book itself. I have other Edith Schaffer books on my book shelf but I think I have had to grow up into appreciating her words. The older I get the more I can absorb and cherish some of these past works by those who have gone before me.
I just spent three days with my friend Judy. The above quote meant a lot to me when I read it and it really reminded me of Judy. Especially the part of getting ten ideas at once in different directions! She is a very creative person and it seems when we get together our creativity flows in and out of each other's soul. There have been times when the two of us can talk in such detail about our ideas, that when we had finished we felt like we had actually experienced the act of creating something even though there was nothing tangible to hold. The beauty of our friendship is that we do actually create things together so we really enjoy our times with each other.
One of the fun things we did during my stay was to get the same book and we read aloud. I found it made me really slow down and appreciate the words on the page and they began to come alive as Judy put emphasis or expression in ways I would not have, and I'm sure she felt the same way. We're not sure how to proceed with our book because it seems a shame not to be able to continue together in that way. Maybe we can use Skype and read from across the city?
We visited a friend yesterday. Judy used to contract me to do her sewing when she had her interior design business and Bob did all the wall paper. We were able to see the work of our hands from 15 years ago at Norma's house and it was a joy! Sara was a part of that circle too and those were really special days that make good memories.
