I always find a good giggle when we walk out of our perspective dressing rooms with matching 'outfits'. It happens so frequently especially on Sunday mornings when we dress for church that it feels strange if we don't. We met upstairs this afternoon for our movie date and voila!
We went to see Paschendale. I hope it comes to theaters in the states as it is a tremendous Canadian made movie and I recommend it to my American friends if it does. It takes place in World War I and it is not only a beautiful love story but a dramatic presentation of the Canadian soldiers who fought the bloody battles. I think it is a must see. The first book I chose for book club was called Deafening and it turned out to be the same thing - a love story during the war. This movie brought that book back to life for me as well. It is hard to imagine the suffering and yet the suffering has continued for a century in the lives of thousands of good people around the world. Will it ever end? One of the lines of the movie about war was something like, "We are good at this because we are always doing it and we are always doing it because we are good at it."
I didn't know Bob during his war. I was just a young school girl. Our love would have compounded the suffering and yet it would have been something to live for and hope for. It makes me shudder to think of how many young hearts were broken. Even when the troops come home from any war the brokenness that exists in the soldier because of the trauma has caused great suffering in relationships and so many marriages have struggled and are only shadows of what could have been. War is a dreadful thing.
I thank and praise God for His Shalom - His peace that passes understanding which has the ability to penetrate and heal brokenness. Many soldiers had anger and unforgiveness in their hearts long before they crossed an ocean. God's love and forgiveness are truly the only answers for hope of healing.
Bob just returned from his vets reunion. Case in point.
Go see the movie. And if you go with your spouse be sure to wear matching outfits.
